Pre-Level 3 will prepare learners for entry to the full Level 3 certificate course that the centre also offers. Guidance is given on the Level 3 course specification and language skills will be taught to improve to a higher standard ready for the full course.
Terminology will be discussed, vocabulary at Level 3 will be taught and learners will gain an insight in to presenting information, discussing and debating on a range of topics linked to the Level 3 course specification. The use of camera equipment will be sought to capture learners’ signing in the above three areas. These recordings will be important to assess progress and suitability for Level 3 study. Research techniques and the structure of presentations will be taught so that an understanding of how to perform in these areas is reached.
Practice will be given on all of the above and full, regular feedback will be provided, both signed and written, so that learners understand how to improve on the areas highlighted. Self-assessment will be explained and undertaken so that learners are able to begin the process of recognising signing standards.
Receptive skills of course participants will be tested through the tutors’use of Level 3 British Sign Language. There will also be regular viewings of recorded presentations and discussions which each learner will be expected to show their understanding of. Guidance and explanation will be given here to support the attainment of Level 3 reception skills. The Pre-Level 3 British Sign Language course does not lead to summative assessment. Learners will be presented with a full certificate of attendance. To gain this, regular attendance is expected of at least 8 of the 10 sessions planned.
